BEAR — Countless other Delaware softball teams have seen their seasons end on this field.

So Caesar Rodney High was in pretty good company on Tuesday afternoon.

But that was about the only consolation for the ninth-seeded Riders after No. 1 Caravel rolled to a 10-0 victory over CR in the DIAA softball state quarterfinals.

The Buccaneers (17-3) needed just five innings and one hour and 15 minutes to finish off the Riders (14-6) and earn yet another trip to the state semifinals.

Caravel will take on 12th-seeded Wilmington Charter in Thursday’s semis.

CR managed just one hit — a bunt single — off Caravel pitcher Holly Brooks, who struck out six. Caravel, on the other hand, finished with 11 hits.

“We just didn’t play our game today,” said first-year Riders’ coach Skye Boris. “She (Brooks) moves it in and out. She likes to get ahead so if you don’t jump on that first pitch, you’re really going to struggle. When she gets ahead, she’s just going to throw the junk and that’s what’s going to make you chase.”

The Bucs scored all the runs they would need with three runs in the first inning. Shortstop Samantha Esper led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right center.

Riders pitcher Alyssa Ball almost got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the inning. But Grace Walker drove in Esper with a two-out single before Emily Proffitt followed with a two-run hit.

Proffitt went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI while Esper had two hits, including a two-run single to end the game in the fifth. Caravel used a five-run fourth to put the game out of reach.

CR had only four baserunners in the contest: Alexxys Harris (hit by pitch), Alexis Howerin (bunt single), Kendall Lewis (error) and Lauren Polinski (walk). All were in separate innings and none of the runners made it past second.

It was the first time in their last 30 games that the Riders failed to score at least two runs. The contest was also a much different one than last year’s state quarterfinals when the Bucs had to rally for a 6-5, eight-inning victory over CR.

“It definitely gave us some confidence,” Boris said about last year’s game. “It gave us more motivation than anything. We wanted to come here and make a statement but the ball didn’t bounce our way.

“I think we had a pretty good season. There were some games there that we could have done better at. It was kind of the same scenario as today — we just didn’t make the plays happen when we needed to.”
