PRINCESS ANNE – The Maryland Department of Education has opened a procurement bid for small farms seeking to provide food to Maryland Public Schools — and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore looks to arm farmers with the knowledge they will need to win that bid.

UMES Extension’s Small Farm Program will hold two information sessions: a virtual session from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, for those who plan to place a bid this month; and an in-person session for general program information from 10-11 a.m. Friday, July 19, at the UMES Research, Extension and Teaching Farm, located at 10789 Stewart Neck Road, Princess Anne.

“UMES is collaborating with the state to facilitate awareness and education of this opportunity for local producers,” said Dr. Nadine Burton, UMES Extension’s alternative crop specialist. “It is of great importance that interested growers within our network have all the relevant information.”

Interested small farmers and producers have until the bid closes Monday, July 22, 2024, to apply.
