• The murder trial for Madeline Straley will be moved to Kent County to ensure potential jurors are not tainted by recent media coverage of her daughter’s trial, Judge D. William Simpson ruled Friday. Madeline Straley is one of four co-defendants in the death of Tyaskin restaurant owner John W. Straley. She is accused of murder, arson, conspiracy and solicitation in the September 1999 house fire that killed her husband. The couple’s daughter, Samantha Straley, 24, was acquitted last week on a first-degree murder charge in the death of her father.
• For the second time, a massage parlor on North Salisbury Boulevard has run into problems with the law. The operator, U. Sum Ma Parker, 40, of New York City, was arrested Thursday after she allegedly touched an undercover Health Department inspector “in an inappropriate fashion” and failed to produce a massage therapist’s license at the request of a police officer.
• The Brown Glass Team has won the 2001 East Wicomico League Championship. Team members include Nate Bowden, Greg Ennis, Vernon Bogg, Brett Belleville, Drew Davis, Aaron Osterwalder, David Shockley, Dillan Shockley, Devon Moses, Zachery Trenary and Jesse Taylor. The coaches are Andy Davis and Frank Ennis; the manager is Jack Belleville; the team mom is Sharon Ennis.
• The parking lot of Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury is the site of the Mid-Summer Bash car show, sponsored by East Coast Minis of Salisbury. Now in its fifth year, the event features more than 150 classic cars, whose owners are competing for an array of prizes.
• Health officials have posted warning signs along the Wicomico River following a lightning storm that knocked out power to Salisbury’s sewage treatment system and caused about 396,000 gallons of sewage-contaminated rain water to spill into the river. An overflow at the Ridge Road substation occurred after 2 inches of rain fell within a few hours, rushed into storm drains and overwhelmed the substation.
