Salisbury University's Sea Gull Century will return in October

Posted

Salisbury University’s annual Sea Gull Century bicycle ride is set to return in-person in 2021.

Scheduled Saturday, Oct. 9, the event will provide cyclists with the option of two routes: the traditional 100-mile century ride to Assateague Island and the shorter 62-mile southern ride including Princess Anne and Pocomoke City.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring the traditional Sea Gull Century experience back to SU this fall,” said Amy Waters, Century supervisor. “It may look a little different, but for many of our cyclists, supporters and community members, this will be another step toward normalcy as we all crave social engagement.”

To better ensure the safety of riders and volunteers, entries for the in-person ride will be capped at 4,000. Other temporary modifications will include a staggered starting time, pre-packaged-only food at rest stops and no meals offered for participants at SU’s dining hall, along with no massage, swimming pool or shower access at Maggs Gymnasium.

Cyclists also will have the opportunity to register for a virtual ride, similar to the one organized by SGC officials last year when Covid-19 restrictions made an in-person event impossible. Those participating in the virtual event will cycle the route of their choice in their own neighborhoods or other destinations, with the option of sharing photos and videos with other riders on social media.

Also returning this year is the traditional collectable Sea Gull Century print. The 2021 artwork, featuring a bicycle parked at Assateague Island with seagulls flying overhead, was created by local artist and SU alumna Rachel Alvarez.

Proceeds from the annual ride benefits SU student scholarships and faculty grants, as well as area non-profit organizations.

Registration for the 33rd Sea Gull Century opens Tuesday, June 1. Cost is $75 per rider. Advance registration is recommended. Day-of registration will not be available.

The ride takes place rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, campus closure, or governmental orders regarding gatherings and campus operations, SU reserves the right to cancel, alter or modify the ride for safety. In the event of a cancelation, registrants may claim their registration fee as a tax-deductible donation. Registrations may not be transferred to a subsequent year, and registration fees will not be refunded.
