DOVER — As a powerful storm approaches Delaware and is expected to bring high winds and rain to the region, Indian River and Cape Henlopen schools have canceled events Tuesday night and delayed school Wednesday.
“Due to inclement weather, all after-school and evening activities, including high school parent conferences, are cancelled on Tuesday Jan. 9. In addition, schools will open two hours late on Wednesday, Jan. 10,” a statement on the Indian River School District's homepage reads.
No morning preschool activities are being offered during the storm.
Meanwhile, the Cape Henlopen district alerted parents via a phone call that it would delay school Wednesday by two hours and called off planned activities Tuesday. Sussex Academy made similar announcements.
In addition, the Capital and Lake Forest school districts have called off after-school activities, and the Smyrna district said it will close for all business Tuesday at 6 p.m.
A school board meeting was still scheduled for 7 p.m., the district said. It will be held virtually at bit.ly/appoyoutube. The public can attend in person, as well, at the Marion E. Proffitt Training Center in Middletown.
This cancellation includes all activities scheduled by the school district for any community organizations, the district noted.
The Appoquinimink School District's Facebook page added, “(We are) monitoring the storm very closely and will keep the community updated as soon as possible should the storm impact school operations for Wednesday.”
New Castle County officials sent a warning to residents to not drive after dark due to flood risk, and added that Delaware City "may be inaccessible" at times due to the storm.
In Wicomico County, public schools will dismiss 2 hours early and all after-school and evening activities are cancelled for Tuesday.
Wicomico County Public Schools will have a 90-minute delay on Wednesday to allow time to evaluate road conditions. Updates will be provided tomorrow morning if needed.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Kent County for the remainder of the week, a wind advisory beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday for Kent and New Castle counties, and flood advisories for Kent and Sussex counties.
