Dorchester man scores $5M prize in lottery

BALTIMORE – Troy Deneau of Dorchester County discovered the second $5 million top-prize winning scratch-off in the 50 Years! game. Mr. Deneau stopped by lottery headquarters with his wife Rachel on Feb. 5 to claim his big prize.

“We are very grateful for this win,” he said.

The 50 Years! game, which arrived in stores with three $5 million top prizes on Feb. 20, 2023, was part of the Maryland Lottery’s 50th anniversary celebration. The first top-prize winner was from New Carrollton. A super fan of the $50 scratch-off, Mr. Deneau said it is the only lottery game he currently plays. He’s been on a hot streak, too, winning $100, $200 and $10,000 on different 50 Years! instant tickets.

The loyal player caught the big prize when he visited Dash In at 7201 Main St. in Worcester County last Thursday. He purchased three 50 Years! instant tickets that day. Troy won $75 on the first scratch-off, had no luck on the second instant ticket and found the game’s second $5 million top prize on the third scratch-off.

“I am now set for retirement,” he said with a big smile, a statement from the Maryland Lottery said.

The 56-year-old is a small business owner, operating a fire-protection company in Maryland and Delaware. He worked for the company for decades before transitioning to ownership eight years ago.

Although he was thinking about retiring after his win, Troy said he decided to stay with his company. “At first, I said ‘I’m done,’ but we have been too dedicated to this company for 30 years to walk away,” he said.

The Dash In that sold Troy the lucky scratch-off is in Willards. The business will receive a $5,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $5 million top-prize winning scratch-off.

Other large prizes are still unclaimed in the 50 Years! game. In addition to the one remaining $5 million top prize, the game has one unclaimed $100,000 prize, two $50,000 prizes, 18 $10,000 prizes and others ranging from $50 to $1,000.
