MILLSBORO — Like crops in the soil, interest in the Millsboro Farmers Market is growing.

Following a highly successful rookie season last year amid COVID-19 restrictions, Millsboro Mayor Michelle Truitt unveiled plans for the 2021 market, again sponsored by the town and council.

“It’s that time of year for the farmers market,” said Mayor Truitt at Town Council’s Monday meeting. “This is Season 2.”

This year, barring unforeseen change, the Millsboro Town Center parking lot will be the venue for 20 Saturday morning market dates mid-May through late September.

Mayor and council voted 4-0 to formally give the go-ahead to the market schedule, approving a start date of May 15. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon, with a carry-in, carryout format.

Initial indications are that this year’s market could have 20 or more vendors, offering local produce, flowers, herbs, baked goods, pottery and other handcrafted products.

“Some of the same people wanted to come back, and then, I have got some new people that have shown interest, as well. So we might end up having some different things,” said Mayor Truitt. “There’s a lot of interest.”

Participating vendors are required to possess a town business license, which costs $25 this year, and proof of insurance. They also must follow all state COVID-19 guidelines.

Vendor setup typically begins around 7.

While entrances to the main parking lot will be blocked off, parking will be available on the side of the Town Center.

In 2020, Mayor Truitt was on hand at virtually all the Saturday market sessions.

Councilmen Jim Kells and Larry Gum acknowledged Mayor Truitt for coordinating and attending last year’s markets and offered to step in this year if needed.

“First of all, I’d like to thank you. I think (2020) was a success. This is going to be ‘Brought to you by your Town Council,’” Councilman Kells said. “I will help out if you need a break.”

Councilman Gum added, “I certainly echo what Councilman Kells said (about) putting this together. So thank you very much.”

Mayor Truitt said she was happy to attend.

“It is interesting what you find out … is going on around town,” she said.
