Greenwood man charged with sixth-offense DUI

GREENWOOD — A 63-year-old Greenwood man was charged with DUI for the sixth time after a vehicle pursuit Tuesday.

According to the Delaware State Police, at approximately 8:35 p.m., a trooper on patrol near Unity and Deep Grass lanes observed a black Chevrolet pickup with one operable headlight. The trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

However, the driver, later identified as Ralph Cahall III, disregarded the officer’s signal and began fleeing at a high rate of speed, police said. After following the pickup briefly, the trooper ended the pursuit for safety reasons. The Chevrolet was then observed by state police on a dirt lane, near the 14000 block of Staytonville Road.

As the trooper approached the truck, Cahall was observed running into a wooded area, where he was taken into custody without further incident a short time later, police said. The officer then noticed signs of impairment and conducted sobriety testing, determining that Cahall was under the influence, authorities added.

The suspect was also charged with disregarding a police officer’s signal, resisting arrest and numerous traffic-related counts. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on a $7,570 secured bond.
