CAMBRIDGE – Three juveniles have been charged with multiple offenses including attempted carjacking and assault after a series of recent incidents.

On Aug. 14, at approximately 6:23 a.m., Cambridge Police Department (CPD) officers responded to the 1400 block of the Cambridge Beltway in reference to an attempted carjacking. Officers contacted the victim, who said he had been sleeping in his vehicle in the parking lot, when he was awoken by a male teenager who reached into the vehicle and unlocked it.

The victim then reported that several other male teenagers opened the car doors and the trunk and started to rummage through it. He said one of the juveniles started to reach into the pockets of his shorts demanding the victim’s wallet and the keys to the vehicle with the threat of a handgun.

The victim began to defend himself and was assaulted by the other teenagers. The victim was punched several times and struck multiple times with sticks, a statement from the CPD said.

A neighbor observed the events that were unfolding and called 911. All the suspects then entered a Ford Edge with Delaware registration and fled the area.

Prior to this incident, CPD officers had responded to Walmart in reference to a vehicle that had been ransacked. In video footage, a small SUV is observed pulling into the parking lot at approximately 5:47 a.m. and parking next to a Hyundai passenger car.

The occupants are observed exiting the vehicle and getting in the Hyundai then returning to the SUV and leaving.

After the incident at approximately 7:06 a.m., CPD officers responded to the Holiday Inn located in the 2700 block of Ocean Gateway in reference to a Kia Sol that had been searched with the steering column being pulled in an attempt to steal the car. Through further investigation, detectives observed the same Ford Edge pull in the parking lot at approximately 5:33 a.m.

Detectives continued the investigation and found that the same Ford Edge had returned to Walmart at approximately 7 a.m. Three male subjects exited the vehicle and entered the store, stole several items, returned to the vehicle and left the area. CPD detectives were able to identify one of the subjects as a 15-year-old juvenile from Cambridge.

CPD was contacted shortly after by the Laurel, Delaware Police Department, advising that the Ford Edge was stolen out of their jurisdiction. At approximately 10:47 a.m., CPD detectives were contacted by the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office who advised the Ford Edge had been located in Trappe.

While TCSO deputies were standing with the stolen car, another vehicle had arrived, in which a deputy observed the 15-year-old youth in the back seat. The 15-year-old juvenile was then placed under arrest for the stolen vehicle.

The youth was also found to have been reported missing through the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and had an active arrest warrant from Delaware. The 15-year-old was later transferred to the Lower Shore Juvenile Detention Center awaiting pick up by Delaware law enforcement.

Through further investigation CPD Detectives were able to identify two additional suspects as a 15-year-old male and a 17-year-old male, both from Cambridge.

Cambridge police have notified the Laurel Police Department in reference to the identities of the other juveniles so charges can be placed in Delaware. CPD detectives have also referred all three juveniles to the Department of Juvenile Services on the following charges:

  • Attempted Carjacking
  • Attempted Robbery
  • Assault 2nd Degree
  • Theft Less than $100
  • Rogue and Vagabond
  • Malicious Destruction of Property
