Winston: Councilman Anderson a big help in Dover

Posted

Alverna Winston is a resident of Milford.

I am a single mother who used to live in the 4th District of Dover, where David Anderson was and still is a city councilman. It really baffles me that people can ask city officials for help, and when they get help and they are no longer struggling, they forget where they came from.

Well, not me, not me for one minute. I’m not ashamed or embarrassed to say I was homeless before, and I thank God for placing my then-custody lawyer in my life, who introduced me to two awesome people: Dover’s City Councilman David Anderson and his truly amazing wife, Jeannie Anderson. I even helped with dinners for homeless individuals at the men’s shelter in Dover several times. I twice entered the chili cookoffs he and his wife hosted for the homeless population and won it once. I helped him with stuffing envelopes to mail to people, not because I had to or felt obligated. I did it because I wanted to help those who helped me.

It makes me mad that some people want to talk negatively about David. Well, I’m going to try to set the record straight. David Anderson is the realest of real people. Most politicians I tried to talk to didn’t care about me or my story. All they saw was someone trying to get free stuff. Well, that wasn’t me. I never stood on a corner and solicited anyone. I legitimately needed help. Most politicians don’t want to help because they want money given to them, but Mr. Anderson took from his own pocket to assist not only me but others, as well. David also serves in the military, so he’s a busy man, but he does what he can to aid people.

David is the only city councilman I ever met personally, but I have spoken with a few other officials, from Milford to Dover. David and a few here in Milford are awesome. I would mention others here, but this is about David Anderson. I want everyone to know that the devil will not get a foothold here. God’s got you and your family. And, for your information, nobody asked me to say this. God put this on my heart, so I’m doing it. You have to remember where you came from, and you definitely have to remember those who helped you.

Also, adding to my story, I was getting disability and just had no place to live. No, I never turned to drugs or alcohol, not even once. I never even thought about drinking or doing drugs, other than what my doctors gave me. I’ve never done any of that. I prayed hard and stayed pretty much to myself. David and his wife were and still are a great blessing to me and my family.
