Wicomico Recreation: Girls softball league is back this fall

The Wicomico County Fair is back at WinterPlace Park for the weekend of Aug. 20-22.

 Junior Girls Fall Softball

Our team-entry-only girls softball league is back this fall. Junior Girls Fall Ball is for girls ages 12 & Under (Minor), 14 & Under (Major I) and 18 & Under (Major II).

Players of all skill levels are encouraged to join and not only work on their softball skills, but also learn the importance of player participation, teamwork and sportsmanship.

The program fee is $500 for 12U and 14U teams and $550 for 18U teams. Registration is open through Aug. 23.

Wicomico County Fair

Take part in all kinds of activities at the Wicomico County Fair, which is produced by the Wicomico Farm & Home Show and Wicomico County. This year’s event runs from Friday-Sunday, Aug. 20-22, at WinterPlace Park, and it is presented by Perdue Farms, the Pohanka Automotive Group and Toyota.

Admission to the fair is free. Hours are Friday, Aug. 20, from 4-9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 22, from noon to 6 p.m.

Activities and events include mounted shooters, jousting competitions, petting farm, 4-H and FFA competitions, livestock, garden tractor pull, fair queen pageant, watermelon and pie eating competitions, music, food, vendors and fireworks on Friday.

This year’s fair will introduce a hot wing eating competition on Saturday. Survive three rounds of wing eating, each round increasing in heat. The winner receives a trophy, Buffalo Wild Wings gift card and monster milkshake from Nice Farms Creamery. Registration is open to adults ages 18 and up and spots are limited.

The fair also includes the annual Chase the Chicken 5K on Sunday, Aug. 22.

The race begins at 9 a.m. All runners receive a race t-shirt and a complimentary chicken dinner. Registration is $25 per adult or $15 per child 12 and under.

 Youth Soccer League

With divisions for children ages 3-13, there’s opportunities for everyone in the Wicomico Youth Soccer League. Divisions include 3’s, U5, U7, U9, U11, Girls U11, U13 and Girls U13.

The 3’s-U7 divisions’ season takes place Sept. 11-Oct. 30 and games are played on Saturdays. The U9-U13 divisions have one practice a week and play games on Saturdays and occasionally during the week. Their season begins Sept. 11 and continues through Nov. 6.

All divisions will play at WinterPlace Park and other county parks as needed. Registration is open through Aug. 24. The 3’s division is $40 per player and the U5-U13 divisions are $55 per player.
