Voters to determine fate of Appoquinimink referendum Tuesday

Posted

MIDDLETOWN — Voters will decide whether an Appoquinimink School District referendum passes the grade Tuesday.

The district is asking for roughly $66.6 million in capital funding for building construction and expansion. Also sought is $11.1 million for operations, including increased compensation for teachers, so the district can stay competitive.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A voter must be at least 18, live in the school district and be a U.S. citizen. Proof of identity, via a driver’s license or state ID, will be required.

Voting can be done at Brick Mill, Bunker Hill, Cedar Lane, Crystal Run, Lorewood Grove, Old State, Olive B. Loss, Silver Lake and Townsend elementary schools; Everett Meredith and Louis L. Redding middle schools; the Marion E. Proffitt Training Center; and Middletown High School.

When the votes are tallied, district officials hope to have rebounded from a referendum loss Dec. 12, 2023. That proposal included technology replacements, visual and performing arts equipment, and safety upgrades to the Alfred G. Waters Middle School bus lot. None of these items are part of Tuesday’s vote.

After that loss, the board of education voted to reduce the ask for the next referendum.

Information can be found at apposchooldistrict.com.

Appoquinimink’s referendum joins several others in the state recently. While voters failed to approve both items for Smyrna on March 9, the Colonial, Brandywine and Red Clay Consolidated districts were successful in their requests in February.

Another vote for the Smyrna School District will be held June 6.
