Indian celebration of Vaisakhi set for Sunday in New Castle

Posted

NEW CASTLE — Delaware’s Indian population and state lawmakers will gather to mark Vaisakhi, an annual harvest day, on Sunday.

Commonly celebrated to ring in the new solar year, Sikh, Punjabi and other Indian communities will come together at the Sikh Center of Delaware.

At the event, guests will partake in langar, a free, vegetarian meal fed to Sikhs and non-Sikhs. It will be served at 1:30 p.m., followed by cultural music and dance performances at 3.

Those presentations will include Bhangra, a traditional dance that features colorful clothing and coincides with the Vaisakhi holiday.

Lawmakers will join in, after having spent hours training with expert Banghra tutor Vishwas Singh Sodhi, known as “Vicky,” who has performed throughout the region, including at several professional basketball games.

Legislators taking part include Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend, Rep. Sophie Phillips, Senate Majority Whip Elizabeth “Tizzy” Lockman, Rep. Paul Baumbach, Rep. Sherry Dorsey Walker, Sen. Stephanie Hansen and Sen. Laura Sturgeon.

The event will also feature Bhangra displays from experienced dancers, including teams with college students and children.

Vaisakhi takes place each April and has been recognized in Delaware for eight years, following a legislative resolution for Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month.

Sunday’s celebration is free and open to the public. For information, call the Sikh Center of Delaware at 302-601-6070.
