Two Magnolia residents arrested in shooting case
By MAGNOLIA — Magnolia residents Howard Hampton, 61, and Cheryl Brown, 48, were charged in connection with an alleged shooting incident Tuesday, Delaware State Police said.
Spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said that at approximately 6:45 p.m., troopers responded to the 100 block of Moores Drive regarding a shooting that had just occurred.
Troopers determined that a 45-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman had been walking on Moores Drive when a white pickup truck began approaching them, police said. The front seat passenger shot at the couple several times as the truck drove by and fled the scene, police said.
Neither the man nor the woman was struck or injured by gunfire, police said.
A trooper located the white pickup on Millchop Lane and stopped the truck as it pulled into a residential driveway. The trooper contacted the passenger, Mr. Hampton, and attempted to handcuff him, police said, but he pulled away and resisted arrest before being detained. The driver, Ms. Brown, was also taken into custody.
The gun used in the shooting was not recovered, police said.
Hampton was charged with possession offenses including firearm during the commission of a felony, firearm by a person prohibited and ammunition by a person prohibited, first-degree reckless endangering (two counts) and resisting arrest. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $40,100 cash bond.
Ms. Brown was charged with second-degree conspiracy. She was arraigned by JP Court 7 and released on her own recognizance.
