Two drivers hurt in Dover crash

DOVER — One driver was critically injured in a crash at the Dover Toll Plaza on Feb. 27, and another person was seriously hurt, Delaware State Police said.

DSP provided details of the crash on Del. 1 upon request by the Delaware State News.

According to DSP, the sequence began at approximately 4 p.m., when a silver Ford F-150, driven by a 58-year-old Smyrna male, was traveling northbound on Del. 1, south of the toll plaza, when it struck a 2014 Chevrolet Cruz, driven by a 17-year-old Lewes male. The F-150 then fled the accident scene and continued northbound on Del. 1, DSP said.

DSP said the F-150 approached the toll plaza’s booth No. 10 and failed to slow down for cars stopped ahead. The F-150’s front bumper then collided with the rear of a 2010 Mazda3, driven by a 33-year-old Newport, Pennsylvania, male stopped in the cash lane, according to authorities.

The Mazda’s front bumper then collided with the rear bumper of a 2016 Chevrolet minivan, driven by a 59-year-old Lewes male, which was pulling away from the tollbooth, DSP said.

A 60-year-old female, also of Newport, a front-seat passenger in the Mazda3, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with a serious injury, police said.

The driver of the F-150 was transported by ambulance to an area hospital in critical condition, according to authorities.

The 17-year-old driver of the Chevrolet Cruz was transported to an area hospital, treated and released, police said.

DSP said the collision remains an ongoing investigation and asked anyone with information to call Tfc. C. Acquino with Troop 3 Patrol at 697-4454.

The Delaware Department of Transportation said the toll plaza was not damaged.
