  • The Memorial Day Weekend was not a “dry one” in Wicomico County after all. The two county-owned dispensaries were back in business after a one-day “sick out.” Almost all of the dispensary workers called out of work on Friday after negotiations with the Liquor Board broke down. Phil Tilghman, a Liquor Board member, said the board had agreed to a $10 increase in weekly salaries and will now pay time-and-a-half for overtime.
  • Thomas Hershey was named was named general campaign chairman to raise $350,000 for the expansion of the Mid-Delmarva Family YMCA. Hershey, an Avalon Park resident and associate broker with Maher-Pillsbury & Associates Realtors is vice president of the YMCA’s Board of Directors. Expansion plans include a large pool, a second handball court, a new exercise room, a youth crafts room and exterior improvements.
  • WJDY-AM disc jockey “R.T.” was scheduled to host a live radio remote show from Lowe’s at 625 South Salisbury Boulevard as part of the hardware store’s Memorial Day sale. Free hot dogs were scheduled to be available beginning at 10 a.m.
  • Sara Jane Carey of Dogwood Drive and Gary Hale Gardner of Miami, Fla., were married at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Edwin Thomas Jr. performed the ceremony. The Gardners are both graduates of the University of Maryland in College Park and are planning a honeymoon in Miami. They will make their home in Orange, Va., where the groom works for a radio station.
  • Delores Couch of Linhill Circle married Anthony Craig DeVage of North Saratoga Street in a wedding ceremony at Rockawalkin Methodist Church. James DeVage of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was the best man. Diane R. Couch of Newark, Del., was the maid of honor. The bride, a James M. Bennett Senior High School graduate, works at First National Bank of Maryland. The groom, a Wicomico Senior High School graduate, works at CIT Financial Services.
