I am writing in response to recent public criticisms of and attempts to publicly humiliate my brother, Kent County Levy Court Commissioner Jody Sweeney, regarding comments he made on his personal Facebook page. While I understand that not everyone will agree with his opinions, I believe it is important to remember that, as citizens of this country, we are all protected by the First Amendment right to free speech.
My brother expressed his views on his own personal account, outside the official capacity of his office. The very foundation of our democracy is the freedom to speak openly, even when those views may not be popular or universally accepted. It is troubling that those who demand accountability from him for his words have themselves engaged in offensive online remarks, including personal attacks and even threats against him.
Disagreement is a natural and healthy part of civic life. However, disagreement should not cross the line into harassment or name calling. When public discourse descends into personal attacks, it damages not just one individual but the respectful exchange of ideas that strengthens our community.
I recognize that, as his sister, my support for him may invite criticism. Still, I feel compelled to speak out — not only on behalf of my brother (who has served the people of Kent County in a bipartisan way for many years) but also in defense of fairness and the principle that free speech applies equally to everyone.
