DEWEY BEACH — Sussex County has agreed to pay the town $1 million toward construction of its Town Hall and police department on the condition it can station permanent emergency medical services personnel there, citing reduced response times.
Since 2022, the county has had the use of the existing building for seasonal EMS operations, but when discussions of a replacement facility surfaced, county and town officials met to discuss a more fixed placement for those responders.
According to the memorandum of understanding, Dewey Beach will be responsible for all aspects of construction and long-term maintenance of the Town Hall. In return, the county will contribute $1 million — half of the fee payable upon a construction contract and the remaining after 75% completion.
In return, the county will get about 1,000 square feet of space on the second floor and a bay in the garage.
