Noncustodial parents’ license suspensions lifted in Delaware

Posted

A listening session held by the Delaware Division of Child Support Services has led to more than 1,000 noncustodial parents being notified that the suspensions of their various licenses have been lifted.

The division learned from a group of parents that, though they were now in compliance with their child support obligations, they had never sought the return of their licenses.

Director Theodore Mermigos said that, through the effort of his staff to review 1,352 active child support cases dating back to 2013, it was able to reinstate 86% of the licenses to the paying, noncustodial parents.

Those parents will need to pay any fees associated with having their licenses reinstated at respective agencies. Letters are being sent to notify them that the suspensions have been lifted.

The division can suspend driver’s, recreational, business and professional licenses of parents who owe at least $3,500 in child support and have not made a payment, as ordered by Family Court, in the past 60 days.

Additionally, suspensions can occur for parents who have outstanding warrants issued by Family Court for failure to appear at paternity or child support proceedings.

Paying parents are encouraged to contact the division if they believe they have made payments for six months or more, and their license has been suspended.
