Spectrum: Photography classes at Dorchester Center for the Arts

CAMBRIDGE - Dorchester Center for the Arts is pleased to offer opportunities to pursue the art of photography with two local, professional photographers. On May 7, Robert Sullivan will lead a workshop at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

The group will meet at 5:30 a.m. Sunrise at Blackwater is a great time for two reasons: It’s when the wildlife is most active, and the quality of light is amazing and constantly changing. Eagles, great blue herons and osprey are potential subjects for the cameras, along with ducks, geese and possibly an owl or two. This workshop will provide information on photographing wildlife, as well as tips and techniques for photographing a sunrise, and for getting good compositions. Equipment: a digital camera with a wide-angle lens. Also, participants should bring their longest telephoto lens. A tripod will be very helpful. A circular polarizer and a graduated neutral density filter can also be helpful, though not essential.

Sullivan is a documentary, landscape and portrait photographer, with a passion for night photography, including the night sky. Since studying film and photography in college, his career path has taken many twists and turns, before finally settling on what he loves: working as a full-time photographer.

In June, Ted Mueller will present “Photography 101,” a two-part class featuring the basics of digital photography. Sessions will be held June 10 and 17, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Students will learn the basics of digital photography: camera settings and function, properties of light, fundamentals of composition, and post processing in the digital dark room.

Each session format will encourage Q&A to address the varied interests of the students. The information provided should apply to DSLR, mirrorless and cell phones. Students should bring lunch.
Mueller is an award-winning photographer, formerly employed by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as an engineer, system engineer, project manager and chief programs manager in the Space Department, as well as vice program chair and adjunct professor at The Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. After retirement, he pursued photography and is currently working on a Professional Photographers of America Master of Photography degree.
