Speak Up: What’s the solution for the Indian River Inlet dunes?

Posted

Weather and tides have proven to be ongoing concerns for the dunes and highway near the Indian River Inlet. What would you like to see to ensure long-term plans to address this?

  • Hire me as a tide sweeper. I could stand at the shoreline. Starting at low tide, I’ll sweep the tide out until it turns and goes the other direction. — Chip Klase
  • At one point in time, there were two inlets there. — Rick Reed
  • Fix the pipe that pushes sand to that area! It’s been broken since the pandemic. — Jennifer Lee
  • Build a dike. It can be used to block rising water, with the road built on top, so it’s above sea level, and there could be a switch in place to open gates that lead to a flood canal for when it floods or there’s a bad storm, to divert water away from the land and back to sea. — Jay Kiriluk
  • Need to put riprap or another structure 100 yards offshore to stop the sand when it washes out. This would then cause the sand to build up and backfill to the beach. — Derik Callaway
  • The problem is it’s natural for dunes and shorelines to shift and move. The fact that we expect them to be stationery is the problem. We have to redesign how the roads are built to accommodate this movement. — Syndie Marie
  • My husband has been saying for years that the road needs to be raised 40 feet and culverts installed under for the water to go through. But hey, they can’t milk the fund if they do it correctly the first time. — Beth Lumley-Weatherby
