Speak Up: House sends bill to governor to limit county restrictions on pot facilities

Posted

More than two years after Delaware’s marijuana legalization became law, the House of Representatives passed legislation June 25 to kick-start the retail cannabis market by limiting counties’ restrictions on the locations of such businesses.

  • Summary: The General Assembly advanced a bill to allow various conditions on marijuana facilities. Each county responded, according to its local constituency. The General Assembly is unhappy with democracy and now wants to impose its will on all three counties. Nice. This is just one of many instances in which the General Assembly wants something (marijuana, offshore wind to benefit Maryland, etc.), and local governments are reacting to their constituents. And, this particular year, we have a true “constitutional crisis.” Who, then, has the last say? Why do we have town councils and county councils, if the state just imposes its will on controversial issues? Idea: Let’s dissolve all local governments and just let the GA hold sway. — Jeff Hall
  • You are on point! The state is made up of three counties, which are made up of towns and cities. It seems like, when certain state legislators don’t get their way, they decide to make new laws so they do! This is taking away the ability of the counties, cities and towns to voice the concern of the people who voted for them, especially since those at the state level do not care to listen! Keep pushing for what you believe in! You are not alone! — Cindy Christiansen
