The House of Representatives passed legislation Thursday that would prohibit the sale or purchase of certain large gun magazines. Senate Bill 6 would forbid Delawareans from obtaining or transferring magazines capable of holding more than 20 (for a handgun) or 30 rounds (for a long gun). The House approved it by a 24-16 margin, with one member absent, in a vote that saw some Democrats and Republicans cross the aisle. The bill passed only after the House attached an amendment that overhauls the proposal. The amendment makes possession of a large-capacity magazine during the commission of a felony a class B felony, which carries a prison sentence of up to 25 years. Transferring such an item to another individual would be a class E felony, which has a maximum sentence of five years. Possessing magazines with larger capacities would not in itself be illegal. The House also approved an amendment allowing the manufacturing of banned magazines if they are intended to be sold outside the state.
- The guns that hold 21 rounds are a lot more dangerous than ones that hold 20. The bad guy has to take a whole three seconds to reload his magazine. — Kelly Lord
- Proof again these folks haven’t a clue about the problem. It isn’t the gun or the magazine. It’s the criminal mind-set and the ability to skip off nearly free with plea deals. — Howard Gaines III
- Was the man who murdered my brother a “criminal” “bad guy” or was he a law-abiding good guy because he owned his gun legally? Asking those who talk of legal gun ownership as if it’s sainthood how a legal gun owner ended up blasting people to pieces. Legal gun ownership is not sainthood. People are way more complicated than that. — Kristin Froehlich
- I don’t know one single gun owner that has ever used the term “saint” when describing themselves. Every group has outliers, gun owners included. But statistically speaking, most gun crimes are committed by criminals. That’s not up for argument. It’s a fact. I have never told you that all gun owners are perfect. Never. — Houston Ervin
- Watch the gun crimes plummet. — David Baranowski
- They should make using a firearm during the commission of a felony against the law. That should fix everything. — Al Greenplate
