Speak Up: Georgetown losing commercial property for traffic improvements
Posted
Progress sometimes comes at a high price. In the seat of Sussex County, a number of businesses and properties near the intersection of Del. 18/Del. 404 and U.S. 113 are being razed to make way for a grade-separated interchange seeking to ease congestion. It’s part of the Department of Transportation’s U.S. 113 Corridor Improvement Plan.
If they put an overpass there, are they taking the light at Walmart out? That is a jammed spot on weekends. Also, the U.S. 9 light jams just as bad on weekends. — Ronald Kline
There will be a “traffic” light on both sides of the overpass. They don’t have a clue what a mess this will create. — Edward Skiba
No, there won’t. The point of the overpass is to get rid of the traffic light. — James Wagner
If you look at the plan, there is a right lane coming off U.S. 113 in each direction, and getting on — with a traffic light at the exit on both sides — two more traffic lights. Would have been better if they used jug handles. So, instead of the left-hand turns, it will be right-hand with a left at the top. — Edward Skiba
The light they are getting rid of is at Del. 404, but you have a light north about 100 yards, at the Walmart entrance. — Ronald Kline
It would be nice if they would put their energy in finishing a project (U.S. 9) around the airport before starting something new! The Department of Transportation has all these unfinished projects but keeps starting new ones! — Walter Howard Barcus
The Department of Transportation isn’t the one working on them. They contract them out. — James Wagner
Doesn’t matter. They should put all the work into finishing a project before starting a new one! The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation replaced a bridge on Interstate 95 in less than a week! — Walter Howard Barcus
That was with crews working around the clock. I believe they even worked in the rain. — James Wagner
It’s a shame. That was like a Georgetown landmark. A lot of people that work there walk to work, too. Hope they can find a job that close again, that they can walk to. — David Short
Finally, they quit spending money on review and public comment of pricey plans and made decisions on how to proceed. Traffic is horrendous. Through traffic to and from the beach only adds to this horror. — Sherry Long
Not sure why we are spending millions of dollars on making everyone get to the beaches so easily. Once they get there, there isn’t enough infrastructure at the beach to absorb all the traffic. That will never change. We will still have traffic backed up all the way to Frederica on Del. 1 and U.S. 113. They need to spend the money at the beaches to make the traffic there flow better, but they don’t have the room. — Jennifer Rambo
Thing is, they are coming. All of us are inconvenienced by it. The state has completed more sets of possibilities for more money than the job will cost. — Sherry Long
Dumbest setup ever. This should have been routed around Georgetown. Same as Millsboro. — David Wootten
Well, folks rejected the other options. Or should I say, the people who were paying attention and showed up for the planning committee meetings weighed in on the previous options? This is what remained. Ergo, it’s been decided. — Sherry Long
