Speak Up: Dover mayor, council denounce violence in Dover

Posted

Dover City Council’s meeting April 22 concluded with a passionate message from Mayor Robin R. Christiansen regarding recent violent events. “Let them get the message that we are coming after you,” he said. “We are not going to tolerate an unsafe city.”

  • I just don’t understand it. There are laws against kids running around with guns and shooting people. Perhaps we need more laws? Maybe, just maybe, if we enforce the laws we have? — Bob Hice
  • The mayor needs to resign. He is ineffective. — Ruth Hamilton
  • Exactly! Juveniles act like they have no punishment to dread or consequences for their criminal activity. I think, if they do the crime, their photo and names should be released! They are old enough to know right from wrong. And, if they are under 16, start charging the parents! Something has to end! Dover is not safe! And I don’t care how much you try to revitalize downtown Dover, people will not be there after dark, if at all! — Danree Fjelsted Heath
  • I agree. No one is going to go downtown for anything anymore. People are scared! The Downtown Dover Partnership is wasting money. — Ruth Hamilton
  • Maybe we should start by electing an attorney general who doesn’t plea down or drop the majority of charges. We need to send a clear message that we are serious about crime. Unfortunately, the city can only do so much, as they watch suspects get released on their own recognizance, with no/low bond, only to reoffend while waiting for a court date. Just remember: Elections have consequences, and the people of Delaware voted for this. This is your daily reminder to not vote for Democrats in 2024. — Jonathan Contant
  • When actions have consequences, we’ll fix the problems. — Howard Gaines III
