Could the state’s Department of Health and Social Services oversee the Delaware Veterans Home someday? That won’t happen unless legislative action is taken, but it’s at least being discussed. The DVH is currently under the purview of the Delaware Department of State. According to its president, Paul Davis, the Delaware Council, Vietnam Veterans of America, would support a change to DHSS control, which would require approval in the Delaware General Assembly.
- Very good rendition of events and hopes for improvement in the future. I will only add that the Secretary of State has been aware of problems in the facility for quite some time. I personally sent the petition to the Secretary and Mr. Knight in August when I first saw it. There were specific complaints and allegations in the comments section then that I found shocking and worthy of investigation by the DOS. It should not just now — four months later — be looked into, though I am pleased that Anna Lopez, the new chair of the Delaware Veterans Commission is giving the issue the attention it deserves. If action had been taken earlier, the staff would not be so short-handed and the veteran residents would have better care, and a special task force would not need to be set up.
