Speak Up: Delaware Education Department seeks $2.35B budget
Posted
Delaware’s Department of Education on Feb. 19 requested an over 9% budget increase for fiscal year 2026 and about $14 million more than what was outlined in former Gov. John Carney’s recommendation. The total request is $2.35 billion, which would represent over a third of Delaware’s budget and marks the highest amount of money that would be dedicated to a state agency for the upcoming year.
Put the money into education. Most everyone I’m seeing comment here is saying how “bad” our schools are yet are against giving the schools more money to improve. By all means, ensure that the money is being spent properly. But please stop equating that, if the schools are “bad,” then they don’t deserve more funds. Our schools are currently how they are because of a lack of funding, a major lack of funding over many years. Please don’t ruin this potential just because of today’s politics. Please help focus on funding the education our students in this state need to succeed. — Sydney Buss
To me, this is crazy! Why should you need this much money? Parents already provide cleaning supplies for the class. Clorox wipes, tissues, paper towels, extra glue, pencils, crayons. So, why do you need the extra money? They need it to give people raises, not to help the schools. — Amber Graleski
I can’t believe I have to say this, but believe it or not, Clorox wipes are not a significant part of the education budget. — Scott Ryan
Second smallest state in the union but asking for a $2.35 billion education budget? I would love to see an itemized breakdown of this! Teachers aren’t getting the money, so where is it going? — Mike Klosowski
We need a Department of Government Efficiency in Delaware, to see what this one-party state is doing with our money! It can afford an underground tunnel for Legislative Hall but can’t fund our children’s protection! Inflation, electric bills and taxes are all on the rise, while the state is chasing big companies out. Well done, politicians. — Richard Kerchevall
