Speak Up: City of Dover shuts down Irish Mike’s pub in interest of ‘public safety’

Posted

Following a “number of incidents in and outside” of Irish Mike’s Olde Towne Pub, the bar has been indefinitely closed, according to Mayor Robin Christiansen. On Sept. 10, the pub’s business license was withdrawn and its liquor license suspended. From May 14 to Sept. 4, police responded to the Irish Mike’s address 35 times “for calls ranging from miscellaneous service, to burglary alarms, to more serious incidents, such as the fights, assaults, etc.,” Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said.

  • Perfect example of why nuisance laws, etc., exist. — Victoria M. Olds
  • That’s right. Blame it on a bar. — Carolann Dryer
  • Sad to see the criminals of Dover closing down another bar. Maybe this time, the police will come up with a plan to stop this before Dover has zero bars or restaurants. — Joshua Nevid
  • It’s not as they are making it out in the news. — Brigit Gorman
  • A travesty. — Chelsea Alyse
  • So is the town of Dover going to be shut down for the same reasons? — Kevin Maxey
  • Dover is a dump. — Mark A. Courtney
  • Another business killed by the city of Dover. — Louis Simek
  • I never had a problem there. — Vernard Atkinson
  • The story isn’t adding up. Maybe a bad crowd in the area with patrons leaving, but that’s not a bar issue. Plus the “owner” posted he voluntarily closed down, and now, city of Dover says it is mandatorily closing it. Hmm. — Carla Michelle Strother
  • That’s crazy. Ruin someone’s livelihood because people don’t know how to act. — Brandi Harris
  • I mean, no one wants to come to other places in Dover at night and deal with that crowd. Now, they want to charge to park during lunch. I don’t get it, man. — Curtis Herbert
  • Get rid of the crowd that is causing the problem. And problem solved. — Steven Getek
  • Stop attracting the wrong crowd. Problem solved. — Kathy Getek
  • It’s a bar. Attracting drunks is kind of their thing. — Zachery Egan
  • I don’t buy that, Mr. Egan. What’s happening at Irish Mike’s is a shame but needs to be managed better by the owners. Once you allow the first issue, it only escalates from there. Ask Dover Downs. They learned the hard way. — Kathy Getek
