Smoot: Local Republicans don’t deserve our votes

Posted

Geoffrey Smoot is a resident of Hebron, Maryland.

Missing-in-action report: Has anyone seen a Republican politician or elected representative of the common middle class in local, state or national politics? They are certainly not present in any of our local Republican seats today. Not one of our local Republicans has condemned the vulgar, racist, irreligious, incompetent president publicly.

Has anyone who voted Republican in our last election publicly voiced concern over the corruption linked to our president, his family and his sycophants, such as 1st District Congressman Andy Harris, R-Md.? Have farmers and mariners realized that Andy Harris led the budget-cutting effort that has left them without the ability to farm or fish and have immigrants supply the labor needed to make them earn a successful living?

When will our Eastern Shore voters recognize that they are following the pied pipers of immorality and hatred that is so evident in today’s Republican Party? Where are the Lou Rileys, the Emerson Holloways and the Wayne Gilchrests we all could count on to represent our interests, not the greed promoted by the current crop who call themselves Republicans? No one today who registers as a Republican carries the honesty and desire to serve the “little guy” but rather is only a supporter of the cult that is led by the liar in the White House. The same goes for local businesses and the chambers of commerce who “toe the line” by supporting a Republican Party that does not represent their interests.

And when will the criticism begin that attacks the Trump war that has recklessly made our economy go on the fritz? How many local Republican voters applauded Donald Trump portraying himself as Christ? One could go on and on, but the question is: When will so-called Republicans get the courage to admit that the pied piper they are following is not an American president but rather a self-promoting profiteer off the good people of the Shore and this nation? Only then will our grandchildren have someone to admire that we can ask them to look up to and maybe still have time to save our democratic republic, which we have known for 250 years.

No current cultist Republican should ever get a vote from any of us. Only those who repudiate this current cultist party deserve our support. May we all hope and pray for that to happen.
