Shoplifting arrest made at Walmart in Dover

Posted

DOVER — A 34-year-old Seaford man was charged after shoplifting incidents at a Walmart on Friday and Saturday.

According to Delaware State Police, at approximately 10:47 a.m. Saturday, a trooper was dispatched to the store, 36 Jerome Drive, for a reported shoplifting the day before.

Then, at approximately 4:18 p.m., troopers and officers from the Cheswold Police Department responded to the same location for a shoplifting in progress by the same suspect and two others, police said.

Walmart workers reported that the suspect was attempting to pry open a locked drawer, while two other individuals distracted employees, troopers said. Authorities added that, when he was unable to open the drawer, he exited the business with the stolen prybar.

Upon leaving that afternoon, the suspect was taken into custody by a Cheswold officer. He initially provided a false name but was later identified as Steven Cornish, police said.

Mr. Cornish was charged with shoplifting over $1,500, criminal mischief, shoplifting under $1,500, criminal impersonation and third-degree conspiracy. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, Wilmington, on a $3,500 cash bond.

The two other suspects were issued criminal summonses for third-degree conspiracy.
