FENWICK ISLAND — A 70-year-old Selbyville man was seriously injured when a scooter he was operating was struck by a vehicle Thursday, authorities said.

Delaware State Police said the man was traveling on the eastbound shoulder of Lighthouse Road when struck at approximately 12:14 p.m. He was ejected from the scooter and landed in the parking lot of Fenwick Hardware, authorities said.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Express van, failed to see the scooter and was making a left turn into the parking lot when the collision occurred, police said. He was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The scooter operator was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.

The eastbound lane and eastbound shoulder of Lighthouse Road were shut down for approximately an hour, while the investigation was conducted by the DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Authorities asked anyone with information to contact Master Cpl. Kenneth Argo at 644-5020.
