CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge will have a new tradition on Sunday.

The groundbreaking of “The Blessing of the Seeds” will take place at the white-steepled Immanuel Church of Christ on US Rt. 50. “The Blessing of the Seeds” follows examples like “The Blessing of the Fleet” across the ocean in Corsica, “The Blessing of the Combines” in Snow Hill, and others.

No small shovel for this groundbreaking; instead, the field was tilled by a huge, green, cumbersome machine, a John Deere planter.

Garrett Luthy, a member of the Dorchester farming clan, operated the planter that creates 16 rows at a time, planting seeds and fertilizer. And what new rite could be more appropriate than an agricultural ceremony of thankfulness with so many farming families in Dorchester County?

The idea for the celebration is explained by a sentence in the church’s newsletter. “The seeds for this worship were planted a year ago, sat dormant, have germinated and broke through to see the light of day.” The service on Sunday will bless seeds and springtime as symbols of hope and the Easter celebration of Resurrection.

Prayer and preaching, songs and scriptures will take place as the seeds of farmers and gardeners are blessed. Farmer Dan Luthy says “It makes me feel better. Grain prices were low last year.”

Pastor Dale Krotee explains, “The church service will end outside as worshipers sing and give thanks, asking a blessing on the soil, water, seeds and equipment.” As Garrett Luthy plants the corn, worshipers will also ask a blessing for the hands, the legs and the backs that do the work.

Gardeners, farmers and members of the whole community are invited to The Blessing of the Seeds, which takes place at Immanuel United Church of Christ this Sunday at 10 a.m.
