A week of 90-degree-plus weather was fraying nerves and killing crops across Delmarva. With three more days of heat and humidity in the forecast, Salisbury Police said they had stopped ordering kids not to swim near City Park’s west dam.

Delmarva Poultry Industry President Samuel Quillen announced the group would not take a stand on which candidate to support in the upcoming 1st District congressional race. Incumbent Thomas F. Johnson was facing a challenge from Rogers C.B. Morton.

Salisbury Zoo, through the local Exchange Club, was holding a balloting campaign to select a new animal to house. Ahmed Aoudad the elephant held the lead over: Barbara Baboon, Buffalo Bill Bison, Llewellyn L. Llama, Peter Penguin and Zachary Yak. Attendance at the zoo had increased to record levels during the campaign.

J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward on Main Street said they would begin opening on Wednesdays during the summer months. Many local retailers and department stores have continued to follow summer closing hours implemented during World War II.

Local Girl Scout Barbara Franey, 15, of 905 Camden Ave. and Wicomico High School 10-grader, was selected to participate in the Senior Girl Scouts All-State Encampment at Camp Tocanja in Muskegon, Mich.

Defending champ Charlie Bassler of Indian Spring Country Club arrived in town to defend his Salisbury Open golf title at Green Hill Yacht & Country Club. Local pros hoping to dethrone Bassler include Ms O’Linger of Ocean City, Jack Slayton of the Elks and Harry Ouffitt of Green Hill.
