Frostburg State, ranked No. 16 in Division III, was too much for Wesley College on Thursday evening, rolling to an 18-5 men’s lacrosse victory over the Wolverines in Miller Stadium.

Sam Seibert contributed on all five goals for the Wolverines (3-6). The senior netted four of them, and assisted on the fifth with Nate Gemmato putting it away. Seibert also led Wesley with five ground balls and won four out of eight faceoffs. Eric Bohns and Nolan Vesey each gained a team-high three caused turnovers while goalie Cody Ireland made 13 saves.

The contest started with Nate Gemmato winning the opening faceoff and the Wolverines working the ball to Seibert at the top of zone. The senior charged left and fired a rocket, beating the Bobcats’ goalie top shelf to put Wesley ahead 1-0.

But the tally marked Wesley’s only first-quarter score as the Bobcats went on a 9-0 run stretching into the second frame. Gemmato and Seibert scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 9-3, but the Frostburg offense netted four more before halftime to take a 13-3 lead into the break.

College athletics

UD hosting Downstate Day: University of Delaware athletics will hit the road again this spring when the Blue Hens head downstate to Smyrna High for a day of entertainment including football, giveaways, and youth skills clinics on Saturday, April 16.

Boys and girls 5 to 12 years of age are able to register in advance to participate in either the free football or soccer skills clinics beginning at 10:30 a.m.  Select Delaware football, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer players and coaches will be on hand to provide on-field sport-specific activities with the registered youth participants for 45 to 60 minutes. No equipment is needed by participants, however, comfortable athletic attire and sneakers are strongly recommended.

Day of registration will not be available. Online registration is currently open at www.BlueHens.com/DownstateDay until April 6 or once filled.

Delaware football coach Dave Brock, now entering his fourth year at the helm of the Blue Hens, will lead his team in a practice session as part of the event beginning at noon.
