Roundup: Riders rally past IR on two late goals

Caesar Rodney High scored twice in a three-minute span late in the game to pull out a 2-1 victory over Indian River in their boys’ soccer showdown on Tuesday night.

Thaddeus Glasser tied the contest on a penalty kick in the 75th minutes before Sawyer Ott added the game-winner three minutes later as the Riders (5-0-1) stayed unbeaten.

CR snapped a two-game losing streak to the Indians (3-1-1) but has now won six of the last 10 meetings.

Freshman Trevor Sullivan assisted on Ott’s goal while goalie Kaden Childs made six saves. The Riders out-shot IR, 19-11, and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Indian freshman Dominic Delaney broke a scoreless tie 58 minutes into the game while Reece Stone made 14 saves.

Cape Henlopen 5, Laurel 3: The Vikings built a 3-1 halftime advantage before holding off the Bulldogs.

Nicholas Panyko and Aldo Hernandez-Becerra both scored twice for Cape, Daniel Shives also scored while Ethan Shuttleworth had two assists. Dalson Chase and Dru Schneider combined for nine saves as Cape held advantages of 20-12 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

Darel Perez-Ortiz netted all three goals for Laurel (5-1), while Dustin Reynolds made 15 saves.

Delmar 8, Sussex Tech 1: Mason Ball tallied the Wildcats’ first three goals in their win.

Six different players scored for Delmar, which led 5-0 at halftime.

Luke Bunting scored a second-half goal for the Ravens.

Dover 4, Appoquinimink 4: The Senators out-scored the Jaguars, 3-2, in the second half to earn a non-conference tie.

Seaford 3, Smyrna 3: The Blue Jays scored three second-half goals to earn the tie with the Eagles.

Sussex Academy 1, Polytech 0: The Seahawks used a first-half goal to down the Panthers.

Sussex Central 5, Woodbridge 0: The Golden Knights netted four first-half goals before shutting out the Blue Raiders.

Field hockey

Smyrna 1, Lake Forest 0: Reese Nacrelli’s overtime goal lifted the Eagles to the hard-earned victory.

Dru Moffett assisted on the goal with Halle Geiger making six saves. Smyrna held advantages of 26-8 in shots and 15-6 in penalty corners.

For the Spartans, Addyson Stewart made 12 saves with Madison Lawson making eight.

Polytech 4, Woodbridge 2: The Panthers tallied the game’s first three goals before topping the Blue Raiders.

Kylee LaVere scored twice with Megan Popp and Elizabeth Szell also scoring for Polytech, which got a combined seven saves from Raegan Thomas and Jourdyn Johnson.

Caroline Scott tallied both Woodbridge goals in the third quarter with Parker Keeler assisting on both. Alyssa Anthony made two saves as the Raiders held edges of 8-6 in shots and 11-3 in corners.

Sussex Academy 2, Milford 0: The Seahawks got second-half goals from Lilian Manlove and Rilyn Lehman in the shutout win.

Sussex Academy (4-1) finished with advantages of 25-3 in shots and 8-1 in corners.

Sussex Central 10, Seaford 0: The Golden Knights blanked the Blue Jays to even their record at 3-3.

Volleyball

Delmarva Christian 3, Dover 0: The Royals picked up the non-conference victory by scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.

Freshman Elaina Millaway had 15 kills and 18 digs for Delmarva Christian, which was also paced by Makayla Heinrichs (17 assists, 2 aces), Rachel Fetterman (16 digs) and Sierra Troyer (8 kills, 15 digs).

Smyrna 3, Indian River 1: The Eagles won the finals two sets to close out the 25-21, 22-25, 25-12, 25-17 victory.

Smyrna was paced by Anna Richardson (13 kills, 10 digs), Karalyn Osborne (4 kills, 3 aces, 8 digs, 20 assists), Gianna Romano (6 kill, 2 aces, 11 digs) and Mia Schultz (6 kills, 2 aces).

Caesar Rodney 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Riders (5-1) downed the Seahawks by scores of 25-12, 25-12, 25-11 for their third win in a row.

Alexandra Mardesich had 13 kills and three aces for CR while Melissa Eddy had 10 kills. Kaitlyn Hand added 17 digs and fives with Gabrielle collecting 17 assists and Lindsey Shuba contributing 11.

Polytech 3, Delmar 1: The Panthers registered the win over the Wildcats.

Sussex Central 3, Woodbridge 0: The Golden Knights earned a win over the Blue Raiders.

Brenya Reid had 15 kills, Katelynn MCTeer had 19 assists and four aces and Kyleigh McGee added eight aces.

St. Elizabeth 3, First State Military 0: The Vikings downed the Bulldogs by scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-21.

College soccer

MEN, Delaware 3, UMBC 1: Three different Blue Hens scored goals as Delaware (1-6-1) earned its first win of the season.

Einar Hardarson, Carlos Fernandez and Zach Golden each scored for the Hens.

With the contest tied 1-1 in the 56th minute, Pedro Barbolla dribbled to the left endline before feeding a pass to Fernandez, who scored from close range to put the Hens in front for good. Fernandez now leads UD with three goals this season, while Barbolla picked up his first career assist.
