Ninth-seeded Milford High rolled to a 63-46 win over No. 8 St. Elizabeth in the second round of the DIAA boys’ basketball state tournament on Friday night.

The victory puts the Henlopen Conference Southern Division champion Buccaneers (16-6) in Sunday’s state quarterfinals at the Carpenter Center.

Milford will face top-seeded Sanford (18-2) at 6 p.m. in the last of the four quarterfinal games.

Three Bucs scored in double figures on Friday: Brion Murray (16), Son Martinez (13) and Henry Nesmith (13). Milford sank four three-pointers in the contest.

The Bucs led by five before outscoring the Vikings (14-7) by a 20-8 margin in the fourth quarter.

Sanford 75, Woodbridge 48: The top-seeded Warriors ousted the No. 17 Raiders in another second-round contest on Friday.

Woodbridge finishes with a record of 17-5 while Sanford (18-2) moves onto a quarterfinal matchup with Milford.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Hood 12, Wesley 11: Francesca Benitez scored four goals and dished off an assist in her return to the field but it wasn’t enough in the Wolverines’ loss.

The midfielder had missed the Wolverines’ prior two games due to injury.

Fallon Fore scored twice and dished off a pair of assists while Maddison Cypher netted three goals and Ashley Luna added two more. Nyi Wright led Wesley (1-3) with three ground balls and Foley Wassmuth, Bailey Olds, and Naomi Reynolds each registered a caused turnover.

Goalie Savannah Clough made seven saves to take the loss in net.

Wesley tied the game at 10-10 with Francesca Benitez finding Ashley Luna for a crucial goal. Hood responded with a pair of goals to take a 12-10 lead over the Wolverines. With 3:42 remaining, Benitez netted a free position shot to cut the lead to just one goal.

College equestrian

DSU tops national champs: Delaware State outscored South Carolina by four points in the English competition and battled to the draw in the Western rides to post a 10-6 upset victory over the defending national champion Gamecocks at the State Fairgrounds on Friday.

USC is ranked No. 9 in the latest National Collegiate Equestrian Association monthly poll.

The victory was DSU’s second against a nationally-ranked opponent this season and third in program history. The Hornets defeated No. 8 New Mexico last November. Delaware State’s first win against a ranked team was in Oct. 2013 against No. 9 SMU.

The Hornets were 3-1 winners on the Flat and in Fences to post a 6-2 victory in the English rides.

Delaware State’s Hayley Anderson was Most Outstanding Performer on the Flat after leading all riders with a score of 88 aboard “Lim.”

Vanessa Rabito, riding on “Lead Belly” (84), and Alex Gill, on “Grace” (71), also earned points on the Flat for the Hornets.

Gill (85), Rachel Dantley (82) and Anderson (81) had winning rides to account for the DSU points in Fences.

The Hornets outscored South Carolina 637-621 in total points in the English competition.

In the razor thin Western competition, the Hornets and Gamecocks battled to a 2-2 tie in Horsemanship and Reining.

Delaware State’s Brooke Moore topped all Horsemanship riders with a score of 72.5 aboard “Calvin” to earn Most Outstanding Performer honors. Alex Gratkowski (“Cass”) collected DSU’s other Horsemanship point with a score of 71.

In the Reining competition, Cheyenne Adams rode “Mini” to a score of 69.5 and Lizzy Koons tallied 69 points on “Twiggy” to post wins for the Hornets.
