PRINCESS ANNE — As the June 4 municipal election nears the Town Commissioners voted to replace one of the newly-appointed supervisors of elections who resigned due to work obligations.

According to town attorney Paul Wilber, Eric Ballard, appointed in February, was unable to continue. “It’s more than just showing up on election day,” Mr. Wilber said, as ahead of the balloting there are meetings and procedures and processes to review and put in place.

Prior to their April work session, the commissioners in special session voted to appoint Cynthia Perry, a recent applicant, to fill the vacancy. The vote was 4-0 with Commissioner Lionel Frederick absent.

The election board is chaired by Kendra Hayward, who is deputy state’s attorney, and also continuing are residents Warner Sumpter and Tyboia Brown, with Valentina Downing appointed in February. For many years the board was capped at three members, but was expanded to five in 2020.

This election cycle the seats held by District 1 Commissioner Marshall Corbin and District II Commissioner Orlondo “Dell” Taylor are before the voters with balloting to again take place at the Election House in Manokin River Park.

The last day to file as a candidate and have his or her name appear on the printed ballot is April 19 but a write-in candidate may file as late as May 28, which is how Commissioner Corbin was elected. The filing fee is $10.

The last day to register to vote is Tuesday, May 21 and is handled by the county election office in the County Office Complex, 11918 Somerset Avenue.
