DOVER — He’s Ron Poliquin the hall of fame professional wrestler who goes by “The Honorable RGP” in the ring.

When in character Poliquin portrays his persona as “being your classic kind of heel who’s limited athletically, but smart and cagey and can work his way up by bending the rules a little bit and kind of being smarter than the next guy.”

Poliquin explained “Your basic wrestling history is you have a heel, you have a baby face.

“They’re both wrestlers but the baby face is a little bit better of a wrestler.

“The heel has to cheat in order to move ahead, so I thought ‘The Honorable RGP’ would be like the puppet master -he could manipulate people.”

According to the recently inducted Dynamite Championship Wrestling Hall of Famer, “The best wrestling characters are just kind of animated, extended versions of your own personality times like 100.”

So how does Poliquin envision his persona as a real life attorney operating The Poliquin Firm in Dover?

“I always tell potential clients, ‘I don’t ever claim I’m the best attorney, but I am the best attorney for certain situations,’” he said.

“Ultimately, I find being an aggressive and tenacious advocate for my clients puts them in the best situations to make the right decision for their case — whether that be settlement or trial.”

Poliquin’s alter-ego recently earned the honor for providing action and entertainment for around 18 years. He was inducted into the hall of fame at a DCW event on March 23 at Delaware Auto Exchange in Felton.

Since he was 8 or 9 years old and living in Mount Holly, New Jersey, Poliquin has been a big professional wrestling fan.

Poliquin, now 46, pulled for Ric Flair, Gorgeous Jimmy Valiant, Ronnie Garvin and the Four Horseman as a kid. He’s thrilled now to be performing as they once did.

“I think there’s nothing like performing in front of the live crowd getting that automatic reaction,” he said.

“There’s that satisfaction of being out there and kind of being able to manipulate the crowd’s emotions and go from the highs of either getting the victory and hearing them cheer for the term we have of ‘Putting someone over’, making someone else look good and making somebody else become a bigger star.

“I kind of go out there with the objective of making the fans feel like I did when I was like them, to experience that emotion.”

Poliquin said a payday typically ranges from $25 to $100 per match, and there’s money to be made selling merchandise such as posters, photos and T-shirts.

Crowds in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia have ranged from 20 to 200, Poliquin said.

“You’re getting people that are passionate about wrestling,” he said.

Additionally, according to Poliquin, “You never know who’s going to be there watching for the first time.

“There might be somebody that got dragged there by somebody else, so you want them by the end of the night to say ‘Oh, that was that was a fun experience.’ “

It wasn’t the first time Poliquin has been honored for an athletic endeavor — he’s a member of the Eureka College Athletic Hall of Fame for his blocking prowess as a football offensive lineman.

Poliquin will participate in the DCW event on April 20 at the Delaware Auto Exchange in Felton. Doors open at 6 p.m. and wrestling starts at 7 p.m.
