Police: Investigation into alleged misconduct in Smyrna classroom ongoing

Posted

SMYRNA — An investigation into possible misconduct inside a Smyrna School District classroom is ongoing, Smyrna Police spokesman Lt. Brian Donner said Wednesday.

“I can confirm that the district notified us on (Feb. 16) about the alleged misconduct within one of their classrooms. We are investigating to determine if there is a criminal nature to any of the alleged conduct,” he said.

“Right now, we’re still in the very preliminary stages, conducting interviews and trying to gather as much information as possible. We are working in conjunction with the Delaware Department of Justice and don’t have much more to release right now until we get more facts.”

Also Thursday, spokesman Mat Marshall said the Delaware Department of Justice didn’t “have anything to add to (the Smyrna Police) statement at this time.”

Smyrna School District superintendent Dr. Susan Brown issued two statements Wednesday, the first coming at noon that read:

“A report was made to the Smyrna School District on February 16, 2024, alleging possible professional misconduct in a classroom at Smyrna Elementary School.

“As part of our multi-faceted approach to keep our students safe, we have taken all precautions, including contacting law enforcement and providing alternative staff to instruct students. The investigation is active and ongoing.”

An updated statement came later Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

“Earlier today, the school district issued a statement regarding a personnel matter relating to a specific classroom at Smyrna Elementary School.

“While I cannot go into detail, due to the ongoing investigation, I can assure you that the professional misconduct being investigated is not sexual in nature.

“District staff were at the school to support students, employees and affected parents. It is understandable that questions remain regarding this active investigation.

“We will continue to update parents and guardians as soon as more information is available.”
