Pedestrian dies after struck by vehicle in Bethany Beach

BETHANY BEACH - Celeste Speer, 89, of Bethany Beach, died from injuries suffered when struck by a vehicle while walking in a parking lot Friday, authorities said.

Ms. Speer was walking in a parking space at Walgreens at 32979 Coastal Highway when a Hyundai Tucson vehicle turned in to the same parking space and struck her.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m., Delaware State Police spokeswoman Sgt. India Sturgis said.

Ms. Speer was transported to an area hospital, where she died.

The vehicle driver, and 82-year-old Bowie, Maryland woman was not injured.
The parking lot of Walgreens was closed for approximately four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to contact Sgt. J. Burns by calling 302-703-3269.
