Paul: Time has come for tough decisions about Dover crime

Posted

Editor’s note: The following was also sent to Dover Police Chief Tom Johnson and Mayor Robin Christiansen on April 9.

Good morning, Chief Johnson and Mr. Mayor! Well, there was another shooting, and I was informed it was allegedly on Governors Avenue!

Now, another activist and I were literally just in the downtown area last night, and more than 15 people were gathered on Governors, smoking crack, selling drugs and selling their bodies after 1 a.m.!

There were no officers, with the exception of my call and one incident on the other side of Governors from the fire station.

Constituents want local officials to get the police substation active and get the curfews for these youth put in place. Constituents don’t wish to have a fluff meeting about gang violence intervention just to hear people talk. Constituents are past hearing talk and seeing no action!

Let this be one of your children, grandchildren, parents or even yourselves; then, you will want something done. There is more police presence at meetings at Town Hall than downtown right now!

Constituents are asking city leaders to make some tough decisions. Please put the academy on pause and use those officers and the financial resources to get the substation operable immediately.

Chelle Paul
