I read an Opinion in the Daily State News’ written by Mr. William Faust, regarding his opposition to Dover City Council President David Anderson and friends proposing to give $75,000 of Strong Funds to small businesses downtown to pay for their electric bills, while construction is being performed on Loockerman Street for the Capital City 2030 development plan (“Proposal to aid Dover businesses questioned”). I happen to agree with the writer and his objection to these funds being given away without the taxpayers’ consent.
Mr. Anderson apparently believes he is smarter than the average Dover taxpayer. His actions show poor judgment and character, since he did not put his proposal before the citizens of Dover.
Additionally, I question if these funds fall within the criteria for assisting small businesses downtown, while a construction project is underway. This is not free money, and I have never heard of any other municipality doing this for small merchants during a construction project.
Maybe Mr. Anderson needs to look at the program guidelines before making these proposals in public and seek permission first from the electors who put him in office.
