SMYRNA - A 57-year-old Baltimore, Maryland man died in a collision involving two work trucks Wednesday morning, Delawae State Police spokesman Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell said.

Police said the man was riding in a box truck when its driver fell asleep and drifted off Del. 1 at approximately 11:43 a.m. The vehicle struck a flatbed truck that was stopped on the roadway’s shoulder with the driver outside it in the area of Exit 114, authorities said.

The flatbed truck driver was also struck. The box truck then swerved to the left traveling across both northbound lanes of Del. 1 and off the west edge of the roadway, where it struck a guardrail with its left front bumper and into the grass median.

The driver of the box truck, a 24-year-old male from Ranson, West Virginia was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. The passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene, Cpl. Hatchell said. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The driver of the flatbed truck, a 60-year-old male from Somerset, New Jersey was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

Northbound Del. 1 was closed for approximately 4.5 hours while the collision was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to contact Master Cpl. J. Lane by calling 302-698-8457. Information may also be provided by sending a Private Facebook Message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
