Posted

SMYRNA — A 71-year-old Henderson, Maryland, man died in a hit-and-run crash Monday.

According to the Delaware State Police, at approximately 2:06 a.m., a Ford F-150 was traveling east on Wheatleys Pond Road, west of Bryn Zion Road. Simultaneously, a Lincoln Town Car was traveling west on Wheatleys Pond Road, approaching the Ford.

Police said it was unclear which vehicle crossed the centerline, causing the right front side of the F-150 to strike the right front side of the Town Car on the southern part of the eastbound lane. After the impact, the truck rolled onto its driver’s side, coming to rest in the westbound lane and becoming engulfed in flames.

The Town Car exited the road and struck a utility pole before coming to rest, troopers said.

The driver of the Town Car was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The driver of the F-150 fled the scene, police said.

The road was closed for approximately four hours.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and asks witnesses to contact Master Cpl. W. Booth at 302-698-8451, to send a message via the state police Facebook page or to call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
