FELTON — A 36-year-old Harrington man died in a shooting Thursday, and a suspect was later taken into custody in Maryland, Delaware State Police said.
State police spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said that at approximately 4:17 p.m., troopers responded to a shooting in the 200 block of Reeves Crossing Road. Upon their arrival, troopers found a man in the road who had been shot in his upper body. Emergency medical services attempted to treat the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was identified Saturday as Charles Kupidlowski.
Detectives from the Homicide Unit assumed the investigation and learned that Steven M. Smith, 36, of Centreville, Maryland, had been having an ongoing dispute with the victim. Mr. Smith drove to Reeves Crossing Road to confront Mr. Kupidlowski and began shooting at him with a rifle, Cpl. DeMalto said.
After the shooting, Mr. Smith fled to his residence in Centreville, authorities said. It was there he was later taken into custody without incident by the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office. He is incarcerated in Maryland and will be extradited to Delaware to face charges of first-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.
Authorities ask anyone with information to contact Detective M. Csapo at 302-741-2729, send a message to the state police Facebook page or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
