Number of COVID hospitalizations in Delaware lowest since early August

DOVER — Delaware’s number of individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 fell to its lowest level since early August, according to Saturday’s report by the Delaware Division of Public Health.

There are 65 individuals hospitalized with the virus, a decrease of 11 compared to the day prior and down from the 132 reported two weeks ago. Hospitalizations have been on a steady decline since peaking with a record 759 on Jan. 12, less than two months ago.

Saturday’s number was the fewest since DPH reported 60 on Aug. 4, 2021

Of the 65 hospitalized, five cases are considered critical.

The news comes as mask mandates for Delaware schools and state buildings were lifted earlier this week across the state, which is consistent with updated guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DPH said the CDC guidance is based on county or community levels of spread and the level of hospitalizations. Even with the end of mask mandates, DPH said there are times when it is still recommended or even required.

The CDC recommends wearing a mask during isolation and quarantine. Masks are also still required in hospitals and certain other health care facilities, in long-term care facilities and on public transportation.

DPH issued a reminder that people may choose to mask at any time, and encouraged Delawareans to consider their personal risk for contracting or serious outcomes from the virus when making the decision.

The agency said to consider masking up:

• If you are unvaccinated, including children ages 2 through 4.

• If you are immunocompromised, or live, work or are visiting someone who is.

• If you are at higher risk for severe illness (older and pregnant people).

• When community levels of COVID are high.

DPH also announced 38 new COVID-19-related deaths in Saturday’s report, 37 of which were due to a review of vital statistics records. This brings Delaware’s total to 2,751.
