MIDDLETOWN (AP) — A local NAACP chapter in Delaware wants a Middletown town councilman to step down because he attended the rally for former President Donald Trump that preceded the Capitol riot.

Stout wore a jacket with the official Middletown seal. The MOT chapter of the NAACP said Stout misrepresented the people of Middletown by wearing the jacket.

“He is a potential threat to this community by being a complicit participant to this insurrection and attempted seditious act to our U.S. Government and our democracy,” the organization said in a letter to the Middletown mayor and Town Council.

The letter also was sent to Gov. John Carney and state lawmakers.

Stout said he was there to hear Trump speak and denounced the violence that followed. He said he has concerns about the election but does not support overturning it.

“Wednesday, Jan. 6 was a bad day for our country, our Capitol Building was unlawfully and violently breached, and all those responsible should be punished. Violence and unlawful behavior should never be tolerated. Period,” he said in a statement.
