Milton couple taking homegrown microgreens to market

GEORGETOWN — From consumer to seller, a Milton couple is in the microgreens business.

Launched in 2023, Cherylyn and Jason Minto operate That Microgreens Guy, a homegrown business that deals in young produce rich in vitamins and nutrients.

“We grow in coco coir soil. We get heirloom seeds or organic seeds. We just water with our well water,” said Ms. Minto. “They are as organic as you can possibly get; super nutrient dense and delicious.”

Among the vendors at the June 19 Hops and Crops Market in Georgetown, their fresh harvest on that day featured broccoli, Lacinato Kale, Red Russian Kale, sunflower, spicy salad, red cabbage, wasabi, cilantro and radish.

Their microgreens operation is year-round and involves no outdoor gardening.

“We grow them inside our home. We have a rack system. They grow under the grow lights,” Ms. Minto said. “They grow fairly quickly. It only takes about 10 days from seed to harvest.”

They have a VIP customer list throughout the year.

“We still harvest every Sunday throughout the winter,” Ms. Minto said.

Their seeds for the microgreens business were planted when they belonged to a Community Supported Agriculture, in which they paid a local farmer for periodic produce throughout the season.

They made the decision to branch out on their own when that farm went out of business, Ms. Minto said.

“I got used to having them. So we decided to start growing them for ourselves, and thought maybe we could also share them with our community,” she said.

In addition to the Hops & Crops Market, which is sponsored by the Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Revelation Craft Brewery, the Mintos take their microgreens to the market in Milton on Fridays and Nassau Valley Vineyards on Sundays.

There is an educational component, Ms. Minto said, noting many people simply don’t know much about microgreens.

“It’s a lot of education. A lot of people don’t know about microgreens. They don’t know the benefit of them. So, there is some education, too, along with it,” said Ms. Minto.

“Once people know about them and they taste them and see what they can add to their food, either visually or taste or nutrient-wise, then they come back. It is definitely something that we see a lot of return customers that come back and try different varieties.”
