Millsboro woman aims to spur interest in Millsboro labyrinth

MILLSBORO — Longtime town resident Dottie LeCates hopes to breath renewed life in the labyrinth, a spiritual/medication circle on the grounds of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

“My heart’s desire is with this labyrinth down here,” said Ms. LeCates. “That is my legacy to Millsboro.”

Built in 2006, the 50-foot concrete circle off West State Street is open to the public.

“It’s ideal for wheelchairs. It’s ideal for walkers. It could be a form of therapy, if people so choose,” Ms. LeCates said.

On Sunday, following the 9:30 a.m. service and coffee hour at St. Mark’s, there will be a public walk along the labyrinth.

“At your leisure,” Ms. LeCates said. “It’s open and welcome to all.”

Other plans for the labyrinth this summer are activities for children and possibly a return of music.

“When it first opened, we had music,” Ms. LeCates said. “It was built by and for the community. It was a prayer circle and medication circle for the community. I’m trying to put some life back into this.”

The labyrinth attracts visitors from far away. Ms. LeCates said she learned that there are bikers from New Hampshire who, while on their way to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, regularly visit the labyrinth.

“And they had been stopping there for years,” she said. “And we didn’t know it.”

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is at 110 W. State St.
