Millsboro man arrested on drug and weapons charges

MILLSBORO - Amir Harris, 20, of Millsboro was arrested on drug and weapons charges following a traffic stop on Tuesday morning, Delaware State Police said.

Mr. Harris was alone in a vehicle when a trooper saw a traffic violation at approximately 12:15. A stop was made on Parker Circle and the trooper detected the strong odor of marijuana when contacting the driver, spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

Mr. Harris fled on foot after leaving the vehicle but was taken into custody a short distance away, police said.

Troopers discovered that Mr. Harris was in possession of approximately .035 grams of suspected heroin and a loaded U.S. Revolver Company handgun with five .32 caliber rounds, police said.

Charges against Mr. Harris included possession of a firearm by person prohibited, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, possession of ammunition by a person prohibited, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief, failure to remain in a single lane and failure to properly signal.

Mr. Harris was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $36,750 secured bond.
